Electrolysis vs Laser Hair Removal

ELECTROLYSIS VS. LASER HAIR REMOVAL – WHICH IS FOR YOU?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal are considered the two best methods in permanent hair removal or at least permanently reducing hair growth. We now take a closer look and compare these methods to hopefully help you decide the best hair removal method for you:

CANDIDATES
Electrolysis works on both dark hair and light hair. Laser hair removal works best on people with dark hair and light skin.

Now if you have light hair and dark skin, then, laser hair removal may not be an option. Unless a more advanced laser treatment, specifically for your type, is available in your area then your only option will have to be electrolysis.

HOW IT WORKS
Electrolysis and laser hair removal both work by annihilating hair follicles. Electrolysis is done by inserting a needle into the hair follicle. A low-level electrical current destroys the follicle. It can be a tedious process as each and every follicle has to go through this process. Laser treatment works by targeting the melanin of the hair, as the light is absorbed, the follicles are destroyed.

PAIN FACTOR
Both treatments are not painless. With electrolysis, the kind of pain is described as like a stinging and pricking sensation. With laser treatments, on the other hand, the sensation can be compared to that of a rubber band popping against your skin.

NUMBER OF TREATMENTS
Because both electrolysis and laser hair removal can only destroy follicles in the growth phase, multiple sessions are required. Laser hair removal treatments, however, go faster than electrolysis and require less number of sessions. For example, laser treatment for the eyebrows will take about 15 minutes and require 4-6 treatments for best results. With electrolysis, the same area for treatment will take about 30 minutes per session and would probably require 15-30 sessions for most favorable results.

RESULTS
The good news is, despite electrolysis being more painful, time-consuming and eventually more expensive, results are guaranteed. This is because each and every hair follicle is treated / destroyed. With laser hair removal treatments, results can not be guaranteed. Some people have experienced more success in this treatment while others had very minimal hair reduction. Hair reduction ranges from 40% – 80%.

FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION APPROVAL
It is important to note that electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal. The laser hair removal, on the other hand, has been FDA-approved for permanent hair reduction.

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal have been proven to be clinically safe and effective and remains to be the most reliable permanent hair removal methods available.
